Our Response

I refer to your email requesting information in respect of CCT in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I can confirm in accordance with S.1 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) that we do hold the information that you have requested.

There were in total 6 CCTs achieved in 2010 for Trauma & Orthopaedics in the  East Midlands (North) Specialty School, and less than 5 in the East Midlands (South) Specialty School.  As the information relating to the East Midlands (South) Specialty School relates to 5 or less members of staff we have protected this information under section 40 of the FOI Act.  Section 40 is an absolute exemption relating to Personal Information and has been engaged in line with the current guidance available to us on the use of small number data. The purpose of section 40 of the Act is to protect personally identifiable information and the privacy of living persons.

As you will be aware, we have a duty under the Data Protection act to protect personal information relating to individuals, and so we are unable to give the individual rotation details for each of the doctors concerned. However, I am able to advise you that the doctors completed a full 6 year programme. We offer training to meet the requirements of the T&O curriculum and not the intended sub speciality choice of the trainee. Sub specialty training in T&O is usually post CCT. Each six year programme comprises:

  • Six Months Paediatric T&O compulsory for all trainees

  • Six Months Hand Surgery compulsory for all trainees

  • Six Months Spinal Surgery compulsory for all trainees

  • 54 Months T&O in general compulsory for all trainees but up to 12 months can be taken OOPE (Out of Programme experience which may be, though not necessarily, in one of the subspecialty areas).

I hope that this information is of use.  If you are dissatisfied with the way in which we have dealt with your request you can ask us to review our decision by writing to:-
