Request
Dear Sir/madam,
I would like to make a freedom of information request. I would like to know the following information: -
1. How much has the Strategic Health Authority spent on private contracts for companies providing taxis for patients for each of the last two years.
(2009 and 2008)
2. I would also like to know exactly what the taxis are used for - eg to ferry patients for check-ups, treatment, operations etc.
Our Response
I refer to your email requesting information in respect of SHA spend on contracts for companies providing taxis for patients and what the taxis are used for.
I can confirm in accordance with S.1 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) that we do not hold the information that you have requested.
I should explain to you that as a Strategic Health Authority, NHS East Midlands has four main roles: strategic leadership, development, co-ordination and performance assurance. We also ensure that local health systems operate efficiently and effectively and that national policy, standards and priorities are met in order to continually improve services for patients and the local communities we serve. As such, we have no direct patient contact.
The East Midlands has nine Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). They are the leaders of the local health communities and are responsible for commissioning health and healthcare services for their local population. These organisations hold their community’s share of the regional NHS budget of £6 billion. They serve a range of rural, inner city and urban populations.
There are 14 NHS Trusts providing healthcare for the people of East Midlands, eight providing acute care, five providing care for people with mental health and learning disabilities and one ambulance trust.
You might therefore wish to contact the above organisations direct for the information that you require. This can be done via the link below to our website:-

I hope that this information is of use. If you are dissatisfied with the way in which we have dealt with your request you can ask us to review our decision by writing to:-
