East Midlands showcases excellence in midwifery

Midwifery supervisors from around the East Midlands join forces to share experience and showcase best practice to improve patient care.

Around 60 supervisors of midwives from the region attended a conference organised by NHS East Midlands Local Supervisory Authority for midwifery last month. The regional conference took place at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham and was aimed at showing leadership through supervision.

Supervisors of Midwives have a statutory responsibility to ensure that midwives practice to an appropriate standard and provide safe care to women, babies and their families.

The conference included talks on user involvement led by a user representative and on leadership coaching, as well as workshops on achieving and developing initiatives to strengthen and enhance the care given to women and their families.

The day was also an opportunity to share experiences and talk about the successful initiatives which have been undertaken to improve services for patients.

Shirley Smith, Midwifery Officer for NHS East Midlands Local Supervisory Authority said: “The day was a great success.  Not only was it an opportunity for people to meet others in their profession and share experiences but it also showcased some of the excellent work taking place in this field in the East Midlands. The feedback so far has been very positive and we hope to make this an annual event.”

The workshops that took place on the day included a practical approach to midwives requiring the skills to perform ECV, developing a midwifery carepathway for low risk women workshop, safe waterbirths in the home environment, breastfeeding, achieving and maintaining baby friendly accreditation and improving Caesarean section rates.
